Marijuana Has Anti-Cancer Properties

July 25th, 2009

(NaturalNews) – The active ingredient in marijuana appears to target cancerous brain cells for destruction while leaving healthy cells alone, according to a study conducted by researchers from the Complutense University in Madrid, and published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

Researchers first conducted an experiment in mice that had been engineered to carry three different grafts of human brain cancer. They injected the mice daily with the molecule tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) near the site of the tumors once each day. The chemical appeared to stimulate the cancerous cells to engage in a process known as autophagy, in which cells initiate their own breakdown.

“These results may help to design new cancer therapies based on the use of medicines containing the active principle of marijuana and/or in the activation of autophagy,” researcher Guillermo Velasco said.

THC belongs to a class of chemicals known as cannabinoids, named after the cannabis (marijuana) plant in which they occur. It is the chemical responsible for the psychoactive effects of marijuana consumption.

In a followup experiment, the researchers extracted and analyzed brain tissue from two patients with an aggressive form of brain cancer known as “recurrent glioblastoma multiforme.” The patients were treated with THC for either 26 or 30 days, then the researchers extracted and analyzed another sample.

After examining the brain tissue under an electron microscope, the researchers discovered that THC treatment resulted in death of cancerous cells but had no effect on healthy ones. The researchers were also able to discover the signaling pathway by which THC acts.

The research opens up the possibility that cannabinoid research could yield “a new family of potential antitumoral agents,” the researchers wrote.

Glioblastoma multiforme is the most common and aggressive form of primary brain tumor. Without treatment, the average patient lives only three months after being diagnosed with the cancer. Treatment extends the average life expectancy after diagnosis by less than a year.

THC mimics a hormone with in our own body
it is one that we release while sleeping/dream
hence the “stoned” state of pot smokers, they are dual active, awake and dreaming at one time.

the study is nice but somewhat flawed.
because we have the substance in our own hormone system already
and this is mere a way to “legalize” and “tax” a natural food supply we can all grow simply in our own gardens.

the second problem is that they then will make it a medicine, which it is not, it is a supplement to something we already have.
medicine laws are very scary and just something big pharma will surely jump on when they get the chance…

my advise is not to go smoke pot or what ever, just investigate what causes tumors and cancer, because the cure is already within us.
and might we need a supplement, we know where to go.

this is a nice “good” news story, but with dire consequences when the money masters and big pharma see the green in it.

you see the medicinal qualities of cannabis or thc are irrelevant to the aspect of its illegality.

there are many drugs that the big pharma sell in the drug shop around the corner, that are not good for your health, some are even bad for your health.

so although cannabis/thc has proven medical benefits and hemp has countless uses they are irrelvant when it comes to discussing the illegality of the plant.

the true argument is that the government does not have the right to say what we can and can not consume in our homes.

they are (semi) legal where i live.

Alas, Marijuana, though it has an increasing number of beneficial qualities, continues to have 3 very serious problems associated with its use, as a recreational substance. First: it offends certain very powerful people, that profit, immensely, from its suppression. Secondly: those people whose morality makes it necessary that humanity continue to see life as a “vale of tears,” rigidly oppose its use on the grounds that, God forbid, it makes us feel good, without any redeeming qualities, such as making us pregnant or otherwise punishing us for our sins. Thirdly: it would require that the vindictive masters that dictate proper and acceptable human behavior, dictates, which, if violated or contravened, make us subject to years of imprisonment, admit that, at least as far as Marijuana is concerned, they’ve been wrong and pigheaded; something as likely as that the universe will disappear in 5 seconds.

I can’t find this study in the JCI. Anyone have a link to the actual study?

Thanks for this! My father has stage 4 multiforme glioblastoma.
