The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has described Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip as a violation of the Geneva Conventions and called on the Israeli government to lift it.
In a statement released on Monday, the organisation called the blockade “collective punishment”, a crime under international law. It described Gaza as a territory plagued by frequent power cuts, a ruined economy, and a collapsed health care system.
“The closure imposed on the Gaza Strip is about to enter its fourth year, choking off any real possibility of economic development,” the ICRC said.
“Gazans continue to suffer from unemployment, poverty and warfare, while the quality of Gaza’s health care system has reached an all-time low.”
On Sunday an Iranian ship left the port of Khorramshahr and is currently headed for Gaza, according to Reuters. Another ship, loaded with food, construction material and toys, will depart Iran on Friday.

A recent Israeli attack on a convoy of ships in the Mediterranean Sea is another indication that Israel kills Americans with a sense of immunity from prosecution.
Furkan Dogan, a US citizen who lived in Turkey, was killed on May 31 during an Israeli attack on the Freedom Flotilla that carried humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
The attack on the six-ship convoy killed at least 20 peace activists, including nine Turkish citizens on board the M.V. Mavi Marmara, and injured over 40 others.

Another US missile strike has killed at least 18 people and wounded dozens in a tribal area in northwest Pakistan, officials say.
According to Pakistani security officials, a drone fired six missiles 50 kilometers west of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan on Friday. They say a house in Bahadar Khel village was the target of the attack.
Reportedly, the previous drone strike killed three people late Thursday at a house in the village of Khaddi, 15 kilometers east of Miranshah.
Almost 1000 Pakistanis have been killed in US drone strikes since 2008.
The issue of civilian casualties has strained the Islamabad-Washington relations.
Washington claims the attacks target militants whereas most of them have killed civilians.

(WSWS) – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) warns that 10 million people across the Sahel region of West Africa could face famine over the next few months. According to the charity Oxfam, eight million in Niger could be affected and two million in Chad. Some 80 percent of Chad’s population depends on subsistence agriculture.
The threat of famine is growing across the region. Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania and even Northern Nigeria are already experiencing food shortages. The strategic grain reserve in Nigeria is 65,000 tonnes short. There are reports of people crossing the Niger border into Nigeria in search of food. This is an area that has experienced communal clashes over resources.

(Telegraph) – The Gulf of Mexico spill is releasing twice as much oil as initially estimated, it was disclosed today, as David Cameron refused to bow to City demands to defend BP.
Latest estimates indicated that the oil’s flow could exceed 40,000 barrels a day – some 1.68 million gallons.
Experts accused BP of making a “fatal miscalculation” in failing to realise the extent of the leak earlier on, saying that inaccurate calculations had prevented them from getting to grips with the problem.
The news threatens to further destabilise BP’s share price, which has dived in response to Barack Obama’s “aggressive” rhetoric against the company.
BP’s chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg has been called to the White House for an emergency meeting next week, as the transatlantic row sparked by the spill continues to escalate. Fulll article here

This includes establishment scientists and all service intellectuals in charge of “interpreting” reality.
In fact, the scientists and “experts” define reality in order to bring it into conformation with the always-adapting dominant mental tapestry of the moment. They also invent and build new branches of the tapestry that serve specific power groups by providing new avenues of exploitation. These high priests are rewarded with high class status. The way to break a monopoly is to remove those laws. This is simple, but not easy in the case of Monsanto, because the roots extend to international, federal, state, and local government regulations. (RawStory) – Comprehensive energy legislation is likely off the table after the departure of Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), a Senate Democratic aide said Wednesday evening, but the chamber can still pass a “scaled back” bill that boosts clean energy.
“I just can’t see where we’d get 60 votes for a comprehensive energy bill with a cap on carbon at this point,” the aide to a senator on the Environment and Public Works Committee, who is closely involved with the issue, told Raw Story.
Graham, the sole and critical Republican in the Senate who pledged to support a cap and trade bill, told CongressDaily Wednesday he’d vote against the Kerry-Lieberman bill he helped craft, leaving Democrats confused and upset. Read entire article
