A number of lurid claims are being made in connection with today’s meteor shower over Russia, including obscure reports that the meteor was shot down by Russian air defenses, as well as a claim by controversial political leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky that the meteor was in fact a secret US weapon aimed at Russia.

(TreeHugger) – On Friday morning, around 9.20 am local time, a meteor exploded in the stratosphere over Russia’s Urals region, near the city of Chelyabinsk (see map below). The shock wave was so intense that it shattered windows and collapsed some roofs for miles around, and the explosion was so bright it was seen from over 125 miles away. Early estimates indicate that over 900 people were injured (no deaths reported yet). So far it looks like a smaller version of 1910′s Tunguska event.

(CNSNews) – The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Web site network includes “Climate Kids: NASA’s Eyes on the Earth,” which use cartoons, games, and other activities to teach children about man-made global warming and climate change.

(ANI) – Astronomers are predicting that a massive solar storm, much bigger in potential than the one that caused spectacular light shows on Earth earlier this month, is to strike our planet in 2012 with a force of 100 million hydrogen bombs.
Several US media outlets have reported that NASA was warning the massive flare this month was just a precursor to a massive solar storm building that had the potential to wipe out the entire planet’s power grid.
Despite its rebuttal, NASA’s been watching out for this storm since 2006 and reports from the US this week claim the storms could hit on that most Hollywood of disaster dates – 2012.
Similar storms back in 1859 and 1921 caused worldwide chaos, wiping out telegraph wires on a massive scale. The 2012 storm has the potential to be even more disruptive. Read entire article
(KurtNimmo) – It is being reported today that former Republican senator Ted Stevens and the former head of NASA Sean O’Keefe were aboard a plane that crashed in Alaska.
O’Keefe is the head of the plane manufacturer EADS.
The downed plane, a DeHavilland DHC-3T, crashed about 10 miles northwest of Aleknagik, Alaska, according to Reuters.
