Russia Request Emergency U.N. Security Council Meeting On Alleged Chemical Weapons Attack In Syria
The U.N. Security Council held an emergency meeting, at Russia’s request, on the alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria which killed more than 40 people and injured hundreds more. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres briefed members saying the situation in the MIddle East is in “chaos” and a “threat to international peace and security.” He said there is “no military solution” to the Syrian conflict and urged Security Council members to determine responsibility for chemical attacks. In addition, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley delivered remarks saying, “If Russia had lived up to its commitment, there would be no chemical weapons in Syria.” This portion of the meeting also includes remarks by the Russian and Syrian Ambassadors to the U.N.
