(NYDailyNews) – The jury in the Bronx synagogue bomb plot case was told Wednesday that the informant who provided the four suspects with phony bombs and missiles was paid $97,000 by the FBI.
The FBI gave Pakistani immigrant Shahed Hussain $44,000 for expenses and $53,000 for “his services” over a three-year period, agent Robert Fuller said.

(CNN) – The director of the National Counterterrorism Center says the U.S. government believes that U.S.-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki had “a direct operational role” in the attempt to bring down an airliner bound for Detroit, Michigan, on Christmas Day.
Al-Awlaki is thought to be in Yemen. U.S. officials have said he had contact with Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab, who tried to ignite a bomb concealed in his underwear aboard the Northwest Airlines flight.
Speaking to the Aspen Security Forum on Wednesday, Michael Leiter did not confirm that al-Awlaki is on a CIA hit list, but told the seminar, “If someone like Anwar al-Awlaki is responsible for part of an operation to try to kill more than 300 people over the city of Detroit, I think it would be wholly irresponsible for individuals like me, or (CIA Director) Leon Panetta, for Secretary (of Defense Robert) Gates and ultimately the president, not to at least think about and potentially direct all elements of national power to try to defend the American people. Lawyers for four men from Newburgh have filed a motion to dismiss the terror indictment against them.
They said the informant badgered the defendants until they got involved in the plot.
They said the informant chose the targets, supplied fake bombs for the synagogues and a fake missile to shoot down planes. The motion said he also offered to pay the defendants, who attorneys alleged weren’t inclined toward any crime until the informant began recruiting them.
“The government well knew that their case had been a government-inspired creation from day one and that the defendants had not been independently seeking weapons or targets,” the motion said.
