(PlainDealer) – The Ohio Department of Health’s school-based fluoride mouthrinse program will be reinstated for the upcoming school year.

The health department suspended the program last year after state representatives passed a bill that required any prescription medications given to students in school to be administered by health professionals. Gov. Ted Strickland signed legislation in May that made an exemption for fluoride mouthrinse.

“Fluoride rinse programs are one tool to help eradicate dental disease for Ohio’s children,” said David Owsiany, executive director of the Ohio Dental Association, adding that preventing tooth decay can eliminate the need for more invasive and expensive care in a child’s future. This is the dilemma I’ve faced within the American education system. We are so focused on a goal, whether it be passing a test, or graduating as first in the class. (KansasCity) – Five years ago, Sprint erected an 85-foot cell phone tower in the middle of California’s Vista Del Monte Elementary school. At the time, Sprint studied the tower’s structural safety and an initial power reading, but since then teachers and students have become increasingly concerned about the tower’s electromagnetic effect on health.

The Vista Del Monte tower is 20 feet from classroom buildings and next to the playground and lunch tables. Teachers and staff at the school, in the Victoria Park neighborhood, have expressed concerns about the number of cancer cases that have appeared at the school since the tower was installed. Janet Acker, a retired Vista Del Monte teacher, used to work in one of the classrooms closest to the tower. She has recorded nine current and former staff members who have been diagnosed with cancer. (Fox) – The Los Angeles Unified School District school board wants all public school students in the city to be taught that Arizona’s new immigration law is un-American.

The school board president made the announcement Tuesday night after the district’s Board of Education passed a resolution to oppose the controversial law, which gives law enforcement officials in Arizona the power to question and detain people they suspect are in the U.S. illegally when they are stopped in relation to a crime or infraction.

Critics of the law say it will result in racial profiling.

The school board voted unanimously on Tuesday to “express outrage” and “condemnation” of the law, and it called on the school superintendent to look into curtailing economic support to the Grand Canyon State. About 73 percent of the students in the school district are Latino.

But supporters of the law say the school board is way out of bounds and that the measure will just distract from the children’s education. Full article here

(DailyTelegraph) – Students in Manchester are having their thumbprints digitally transformed into electronic codes, which can then be recognised by a computer program.

Under the scheme, pupils swipe a bar code inside the book they want borrow then press their thumb on to a scanner to authorise the loan. Books are returned in the same way.

The scheme is being trialled on junior classes at Higher Lane Primary in Whitefield, Bury, Greater Manchester.

Officials confirmed it is due to be extended to all pupils at the school, one of the areas largest primary schools, with 453 pupils aged four to 11.

School authorities defended the scheme on Thursday, and moved to reassure parents that the voluntary system, is heavily encrypted or coded and that no images of fingerprints would be stored. Read entire article
